According to Ayurvedic theories all materials are comprised of one of or a combination of five separate elements (or gunas)these are:
- Akasha - aether
- Vayu or Pavan - air or wind
- Agni or Tejas - fire
- Ap or Jala - water
- Prithvi or Bhumi - earth
Vata
Vata is listed first here as it is also thought to be the controlling energy in the body - it is thought to control the other energies or humors (Pitta and Kapha). An imbalance of Vata is thought to be the initial cause of diseases in the body and mind.
The individual governed by Vata usually has a light body frame - whether they are short or tall they are also slender. The skin of the Vata is dry and cool and their hair is dark and thin. Eye colour is usually dark brown or grey. The Vata individual is quick moving both physically and in talking.
On a positive note the Vata person is creative and filled with ideas. On a negative note their sleep is often restless and they can be afraid or anxious and insecure.
The colours associated with the Vata dosha are warm and gentle colours
Pitta
The Pitta Dosha is comprised of the element of fire. Pitta is responsivle for the heat
An excess of Pitta is thoght to cause angery
The Pitta individaul usually has fine red or fair hair or even dark hair and their eyes are usually blue
A well balanced Pitta personality is thought to have a friendly personality
The colours associated with thePitta dosha are cool and calm colours
Kapha
The dosha of Kapha is associated with the elements of water and earth. Kapha is thought to be the glue that hold the body together - it provides the body with the basis for physical structure. Kapha is responsible for such functions as joint and skin lubrication
Emotionally an excess of Kapha can lead to envy
The Kapha body is thick and sturdy with rich thick hair and either blue or brown eyes.
The colours associated with the Kapha dosha are bright colours such as red and orange. The Kapha stone is Lapis.
